Week 4: Social Networking

How was your CNY? Good? I hope so. Anyway...

I remembered back in 2007 when Facebook was a new social site. I was still using Myspace and it baffled me how these social networking sites keep popping up!

I felt like, "Why can't people keep just ONE online profile?"

So I asked my then-lecturer what was all this hype about Facebook and she told me that Facebook is not only a site where you add your friends and update yourself, but you can also play games, upload videos and advertise yourself. Games? What kind of games? That certainly perked my interest because there wasn't any game applications on Myspace. So I decided to open my own account of Facebook.

My initial reaction to FaceBook was like this...

Yes, I wasn't impress. Facebook seems very impersonal to me. There were things I didn't like about Facebook. The plain white and blue layout. I did not have the liberty to design my own profile page like how I was able to on Myspace. The notification emails and pokes. There are games like...

and...

Yes, these games were enjoyable and it encourages the users to add more people if they want to retrieve a special item in the games. But, I got sick of it after a while. But why are there still a lot of people using Facebook?

Why do I STILL have a Facebook account when I have so many complains about it??

Well, as time goes by, I meet new people. And these new people have Facebook accounts. And for me to tell them that they can find me on MySpace would be a tad embarrassing. (>.<)

Facebook helps me keep up with my friends birthday, since I am so bad with remembering dates and I don't know some of their mobile numbers, so it makes things easier to be polite and greet them on Facebook. I guess some people feel like the 'clean and tidy' layout of Facebook is enough for them. But sadly, it wasn't for me. There was also the issue of privacy and I did once deactivate my Facebook account due to nosy relatives.

Of course came Twitter. Like Facebook, it took me quite some time to get use to it. Initially, Twitter was not as fun because not a lot of my friends that I know on Facebook owns a Twitter account but like before, I got into a new school and got to know more and more people. And these people owns Twitter. I have to say that Twitter suits me better as a user because it's like msn-on-a-go and I get instant updates of my friends that they won't post on Facebook, which are more intimate and casual. So in the end, I saw the pot of gold at the end of the Twitter rainbow!

I think the reason why social networking sites are popular is because it allows us to be contact-able at anywhere and anytime. It helps bring people together in the most unexpected way and the side effect of being interactive in these social network is that your personal views and photographs are expose for all the world to see. I'm pretty much a private person and I will get embarrassed if people see ugly pictures of myself. That's why I rarely upload pictures on Facebook or any blogs or social networking sites. In a way, I rather protect myself before anything bad happens. Call me paranoid, but I'm just being caution because you won't know if there's some sicko out there who holds bad intention or feelings towards you.

With that, HAPPY WEEKEND~! :D

Oh yes, Happy Birthday Mr Choy!!
